Turn off all non-essential street lighting during lockdown
We the undersigned petition the Council to Whilst the general population is in self isolation to prevent the spread of COVID-19 we should turn off all non-essential lighting in our streets and unoccupied buildings so we can all enjoy dark skies over our towns and cities. It might give us all something to smile about during this crisis.
During lockdown, we've had a lot of clear skies and dry weather. There are also a lot less planes in the sky, and the night skies have been immaculate. Since barely anyone should be out at night, there is no real safety issue for leaving street lights on. This could be considered for perhaps a week, or on certain days, to allow citizens to enjoy nightsky views normally limited to remote parts of the countryside.
