Appoint a contractor to investigate four road collapses across the City (2021/05/04B)

Decision Maker: Director of Highways

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: No

Purpose:

To establish a capital budget to investigate four road collapses across the City and deliver remedial works to make the sites safe and reinstate the highway where the Council has a liability.

Decision:

The Director of Highways agrees to appoint a contractor to investigate four road collapses across the City and deliver remedial works to make the sites safe and reinstate the highway where the Council has a liability.

The contractor has been working at all locations so has already established a site and has working knowledge of the issues.  As they are already onsite, there is a continuity benefit to engaging the contractor including expertise and understanding of the issues across all sites. Once the reason for the collapses are identified substantial repairs will be required to make the sites safe and enable the reinstatement of the highway. Where liability can be established, this will be recovered.

Any delay in repairs to collapses or preventing repairs from progressingpresents a health and safety risk while creating potential damage or further damage to homes and the highway.  As such, the Chair of Resources and Governance Scrutiny Committee has agreed that this decision is urgent and exempt from Call In.
